# Which US banks send verification codes to Tether Mobile?

 October 23, 2026 UTC 4 min read

Banks are the strictest services about where they send verification codes. If your bank won't text your number, you can't sign in.

This is the list of banks we've confirmed with Tether Mobile numbers, taken from our [service compatibility page](https://tethermobile.com/service-compatibility). It's a snapshot. Banks change their rules, so test your own bank before you rely on it.

## Two types of numbers

Tether Mobile has two types of numbers, and banks treat them differently.

- **US numbers** are real mobile numbers on a US carrier network.
- **Canada, UK and Netherlands numbers** are virtual long numbers (VLNs).

Before a bank sends a code, it usually looks up your number's line type. A real mobile number comes back as "mobile". A virtual number comes back as VoIP, and some banks won't text it. [Why some services won't text virtual numbers](https://tethermobile.com/blog/deep-dives/why-services-block-virtual-numbers) covers how that check works.

## Banks that work with US mobile numbers

Every bank we've tested sends codes to US mobile numbers:

- American Express
- Bank of America
- Barclays
- BMO
- Capital One
- Charles Schwab
- Chase
- Citi
- Fifth Third
- First Citizens
- Goldman Sachs (Marcus, Apple Card)
- HSBC
- Huntington
- Morgan Stanley
- PNC
- TD Bank
- Truist
- U.S. Bank
- USAA
- Wells Fargo

That covers most of the largest US banks by assets. If your bank isn't listed, we haven't tested it yet. It may work, so test it before you rely on it.

## Banks on virtual numbers

We've tested fewer banks on Canada, UK and Netherlands numbers:

- **Capital One** sends codes.
- **Wells Fargo** blocks virtual numbers.
- **Wealthsimple** and **Wise** send codes. They're financial apps rather than US banks.

Every other bank in the US list is untested on virtual numbers. Some of them may work. If you bank in the US, a US mobile number is the safer choice.

Results can also differ between Canadian, UK and Dutch numbers. A bank can text one country's virtual numbers and not another's, so test the exact number you plan to use.

## Why a bank can work and then stop

A result on this list is true for the day it was tested. After that, things move:

- Banks and their fraud vendors update their rules and reclassify number ranges.
- A bank can tighten its filters after a wave of fraud, then relax them.
- Some banks accept a number for login codes but not when you first add it, or the other way around.

So use this list to choose a number, then confirm with your own bank.

## Test your bank before you rely on it

Do this while your current number still works.

1. **Add the new number to your bank account.** Most banks confirm a new number with a code. That code arriving is your first test.
2. **Trigger a login code.** Sign out and sign back in, or start whatever action asks for a code. This checks the path you'll use day to day.
3. **Keep your old number on the account for now.** Remove it once the new one has worked more than once.

If your bank sends the code, you'll see it in Email, Telegram, LINE or Discord, wherever you've set your destinations.

Got a result that differs from ours, or tested a bank that isn't listed? [Tell us what happened](https://tethermobile.com/service-compatibility#report) and we'll update the list.

## If your bank blocks a virtual number

You have three options:

- **Ask the bank.** Its support team can sometimes lift the restriction on your account.
- **Use the bank's own sign-in.** If your bank offers an authenticator or lets you approve sign-ins in its app, use that for this account. There's no text to block.
- **Use a US mobile number** for that bank instead.

## What a US mobile number costs

A US mobile number is $15/month and includes 50 SMS a month. If you also keep a Canadian number for Canadian accounts, that's $10/month more, and the 50 SMS are shared between both numbers. There are no setup fees. See [pricing](https://tethermobile.com/pricing) for larger allowances and annual billing.

## Get a number your bank will text

US numbers are real mobile numbers, from $15/month with 50 SMS included. No setup fees.
